Abby Small of Pawleys Island our resident Certified Tatting Teacher. She has several items on display in
the gallery as well. Abby has been Tatting since 1978. She is a member of the Great Lakes Lace Group
and International Old Lacers.
Tatting lace is a form of handmade lace dating back to the 16th centruy. The thread is wrapped around
one hand and a shuttle carrying the thread is passed back and forth. This makes a knot called the double
stitch, which froms rings and chains.
Abby first became interested in tatting by observing an elderly lady in Canton Ohio. While the woman
showed her how, the full understanding of tatting comes in the doing. Abby worked her craft on her own
until in 1996 she was asked to teach at a local college.
